Variety of Co-operative institutions have
thrived in Mandya district. Currently there are 1356 societies in the district which
include 8 defunct societies and 138 societies brought under liquidation. Thus there are
1210 working co-operative institutions in existence in the district. This includes mainly 212 primary agriculture co-operative credit societies, 22
housing societies , 40 water users co-operative societies, 6 coir societies, 5 sheep
rearing and wool producers co-operative societies, one district horticultural produce
marketing and processing society, one co-operative sugar factory, 24 women multi-purpose
societies, 7 taluka agricultural produce co-operative marketing societies and 7 primary
co-operative agricultural and rural development banks.
Of the 212
primary agricultural credit societies, 185 have implemented Business development plan.
They had mobilized deposits from the public to the tune of Rs.740-00 lakhs as on
31-7-2001. These deposits are in the form of fixed deposits. Advances out of these funds
are usually in the form of loans. Salary earners, pigmy loans, loans to transport
operators and petty shop keepers. The societies are given banking counter cash chest of
of RS. 50,000-00 each from either the State government, Karnataka state
co-operative Apex Bank or Mandya District co-operative Central Bank.
societies had performed non-credit business of the value of Rs.6846 lakhs in 2000-01. This
business included mainly sale of controlled and non-controlled commodities, fertilizers,
pesticides, tiles, cement and cloth.
District co-operative central Bank has been playing a pivotal role in showing new
direction to primary agricultural credit societies to undertake activities under BDP. The
bank has mobilized deposits to the tune of Rs.140 crores and has advanced in 2000-01 were
of the order of Rs. 55 crores, an all time high.
District Milk Producers Co-operative Union(MANMUL), a federation of primary milk producers
co-operative societies is another premier institution. Total volume of milk procured
everyday is about 1.45 lakhs liters. Apart of this milk is sold outside the district,
mainly in Bangalore and a part of it is converted into milk powder and milk products.
District horticulture Produce Marketing and
Processing Society, a district level institution established in 1985 has been rendering a
very good service in procurement and sale of
horticultural produce, mainly fruits of
different varieties. The society a member ship of 1640 who are producers of horticultural
crops has opened 69 retail outlet in different parts of the District. The society has procured and sold
horticultural produce of the value of
Rs.41,00,000-00 in 2000-01.
district has one sugar factory in the co-operative sector. Which is located near
Pandavapura. The factory has a crushing capacity of 3500 tons of cane per day.
All the seven
taluka agricultural produce co-operative marketing societies
are performing activities under BDP. They did a non-credit business of the value of RS.
4680 lakhs in 2000-01. Three Societies Those of
K.R.Pet , Pandavapura , and Nagamangala- have
been doing roaring business under different activities . TAPCMS of Pandavapura and K.R.Pet
have taken up sales of fertilisers , tiles and cement on a very large scale. The business
of TAPCMS Nagamangala is novel in that it has two medical shops. These three societies
have engaged themselves in the banking
business like mobilization of different types of
deposits and advancing of loans.
The other feathers in the cap of co-operative movement of Mandya district are the establishment of Krishnaraj Co-operative Hospital in 1997 and District information Technology Womens Co-operative society in 2001.
